Hello and welcome...
I'm the product of a freewheeling vocalist/cruise director who once clawed back a passenger's Winnebago from Haitian dictator, Baby Doc Duvalier (long story, crazy story), and a single-working-mother of three turned radical feminist who once wore a mini-dress made entirely of meat (bologna slices) to protest the Miss Nude America Pageant for her local N.O.W. chapter-- decades before Lady Gaga popularized the move (I have photos to prove it; ask).
My childhood was spent reeling between the anything-goes hedonism of my father’s exploits in the Caribbean and the disquiet of my mother’s ire and activism in suburban San Jose, California.
With my earliest influences being a charismatic crooner trying to woo the world and an iron-willed idealist trying to bring it all to justice, it's not surprising I developed aptitudes for both storytelling and diplomacy. It also taught me that life is an absurdly comic endeavor best lived with humor and humility-- and that we're all deeply complicated humans struggling daily in that gap between what we wish for ourselves and the lives we actually lead. Which is where we all live—whether we choose to admit it or not. It's also where all the great stories are.
In other words, we're all in the same boat, here. So, be curious, be kind; pay attention.
I've learned to trust in process—creative and strategic—and that our stories really do create the best context for ordering and understanding the world (thanks Didion) and for approaching our societal fragmentation. Indeed, most of what I’ve learned of value grew from connecting to other people (be it flesh and bone or conjured in verse) through that clever alchemy only a well told story can deliver.
